SUMMARY:Our Great Heritage: Worker Training Schools Series - The History of Martin Luther College
DESCRIPTION:Presenter:  Professor Paul Koelpin\nDescription: Since 1884\, the campus on the crest of the western hills above the valley of New Ulm has played a part in the story of Lutheranism as it was established on the western prairie.  Originally built as a worker training campus for the Minnesota Synod (a German Lutheran church body)\, Dr. Martin Luther College (DMLC) was incorporated into the wider training system of the Wisconsin Synod when the German Lutherans from Minnesota and Michigan merged with Wisconsin.  At that point\, the school’s chief focus became the training of teachers for Lutheran parochial schools.  The campus comprised both a preparatory academy and college until 1979.  Dr. Martin Luther College became Martin Luther College when the WELS amalgamated pastoral training (done at Northwestern in Watertown\, WI) with teacher and staff ministry training on the New Ulm campus in 1995.  For thirty years now MLC has been blessed to serve our Synod as its only college dedicated solely to serving the ministry needs of the WELS.  From one building\, the present “Old Main\,” the campus has been molded and modified to its present footprint with one consistent theme: to provide a functional and well-appointed campus for training generations of Lutheran called workers. The campus has a 140-year history — it’s a rich\, distinctive and\, in many ways\, remarkable story — all of it under God’s grace.\n\nProf. Koelpin has served MLC as an instructor in the areas of Western Civilization and Bible introduction courses since 1995.  He was called to Northwestern College to serve as a professor of history and theology in the final year of its existence\, and he moved back to New Ulm as part of the amalgamation of NWC and DMLC.   The New Ulm campus has been “no small part” of his personal life setting and history.  As a member of the Synod’s 175th Anniversary Committee\, he is pleased to share a survey of the role the DMLC/MLC campus has played in our Synod’s story.\nIf you are unable to join us in person you can watch online at https://vimeo.com/event/5006651

SUMMARY:Union Cemetery Tour 2025
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Rev. Jeremiah Gumm \nJoin us on the tour! The Union Cemetery Tour will take place on Saturday\, May 31\, 2025. Union Cemetery was first founded by St. John’s Lutheran Church (8th and Vliet) as St. Johannes Lutheran Cemetery in 1851. In 1865\, the cemetery was merged with those of Grace (WELS) and Trinity (LCMS) of downtown Milwaukee. This cemetery is rich with the early WELS history of Milwaukee. \nWELS founder\, Rev. Johannes Muehlhaeuser\, helped to select and purchase the grounds. Both he and later WELS President Johann Bading are buried there\, as are the early directors of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary–Dr. Adolf Hoenecke and Prof. John Schaller\, the latter of which also played a key role in establishing Dr. Martin Luther College for the training of Lutheran teachers in the Wisconsin Synod. \nThis tour will focus on these early fathers of the Wisconsin Synod and its ministerial education system. Tidbits about others who lived and served in Milwaukee during the early years of the Wisconsin and Missouri Synods and who now enjoy their final rest at Union Cemetery will be highlighted along the way. \nParking is available inside the cemetery. \nThe tour will be conducted by Pastor Jeremiah Gumm. Pastor Gumm has served congregations in Liverpool\, NY and Maitland\, FL\, and currently serves as associate pastor at St. Lucas in Milwaukee. He serves on the Seminary’s Pastor Partners Mentoring Leadership Team and was a founding editor of Grow in Grace’s Shepherd’s Study book review blog. He has a Master of Sacred Theology (STM) from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.

SUMMARY:175 Years of Change in WELS Worship
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Professor Joel Otto \nThe founders of the Wisconsin Synod were not confessional Lutherans\, and their mixed confession showed in worship practices in the early decades of the synod’s history. While a pietistic influence has always been felt in worship attitudes in WELS\, changes have occurred throughout the synod’s history. By examining church architecture and the use of hymnals in Wisconsin Synod congregations across 175 years since her founding\, we will note the shift toward a more confessional Lutheran understanding of worship in WELS. \nProf. Otto chairs the WELS 175th anniversary committee (2025). Since 2011\, he has served at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary\, where he teaches church history and education and is the dean of students. Previously he served congregations in Michigan\, California\, and Wisconsin. He is also the chairman of the WELS Historical Institute and serves on the Commission on Inter-Church Relations. May this award also honor their contribution.” In these theological German electives\, the students and professor also study other historic European and American Lutheran writings from authors such as Quenstedt\, Harms\, and Hoenecke. \nWhile high school seniors and a Lao refugee (Prof. Phetsanghane) studying old German writings might seem unique\, this presentation will show its relevance for today in the training of our future called workers and the church today. Immediately following this presentation\, the WELS Historical Institute will hold its annual meeting.

SUMMARY:History of Lutheran Congregations in Milwaukee—Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Rev. Mark Jeske \nThis is the second part of a presentation by Rev. Mark Jeske. In Part 1\, Rev. Jeske explored the fascinating history of Milwaukee’s earliest Lutheran congregations. German and Scandinavian Lutheran immigrants from 1839-1875 made Lutheranism the largest Protestant group. These early Lutheran families formed many congregations and erected church buildings in communities that stand to this day as a reflection of their devotion to the Lord. In this second part of his presentation\, Rev. Jeske will review how Lutheranism in Milwaukee expanded in the years between 1875-1900. \n The presenter is Rev. Mark Jeske. Rev. Jeske served as a charter member of the board of directors for the WELS Historical Institute. He served on the faculty at Luther Prep in Watertown and for 42 years as senior pastor at St. Marcus in Milwaukee. He was also the host of Time of Grace ministry. Rev. Jeske has a great love for Lutheran history in the Milwaukee area where he not only grew up but also served for most of his ministry. Now retired\, he continues to serve the Lord and assist various ministry efforts.

SUMMARY:West Granville Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Jim Moeller \nThe annual West Granville Cemetery Tour will take place on Saturday\, June 1\, 2024\, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please meet at the main cemetery entrance at 6815 N. 107th Street\, which is one block south of the intersection of 107th Street and Fond du Lac Avenue. Parking is available across the street at the historic Salem Landmark Church and WELS Museum. \n  \nWest Granville Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Milwaukee County located in the far northwest corner of the county that was known as Granville Township. The first burial took place in 1844\, and the cemetery was incorporated in 1852.  Many of the early settlers and their families who lived in the settlements of Granville Station\, Granville Center\, and West Granville\, all parts of Granville Township\, are buried in the cemetery. \n  \nThe location of the cemetery was a deciding factor in the founding of one of the oldest Christian congregations in Milwaukee County. The Evangelical and Reformed Church of Granville\, founded on December 25\, 1847\, was located directly south of the cemetery. Today that church is Salem Lutheran Church located across the street from the cemetery. The Salem Landmark Church\, built in 1863 which served the congregation until 1977\, is today a museum for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. \n  \nThis year’s tour will cover the Felsing family (the family patriarch was not only a carpenter and farmer\, but holder of several patents with the U.S. government)\, Dr. Allen S. Barndt (a member of the prominent Barndt family and a respected physician in Granville and Menomonee Falls)\, and Christ Sommers. Christ was the postmaster in Sommerville located at the intersection of Appleton Avenue and 76th Street and a long-time member of Salem congregation.  The Barndt family history is a unique story in itself (there were at least three Abner Barndts) which makes a study of their family history an interesting challenge. \n  \nThe tour will be conducted by Jim Moeller\, a son of Salem congregation who has several generations of relatives buried at West Granville Cemetery. He is a retired elementary school principal and teacher who served in the schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod for 44 years. This year’s tour is the twelfth tour conducted by Jim\, and he enjoys sharing the history of Granville Township and these early and later settlers.

SUMMARY:150th Anniversary of the Founding of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference
DESCRIPTION:150th Anniversary of the Founding of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America — Worship Service & Presentation — The Synodical Conference: Founded on Fundamental Unity \n\nDate: Sunday\, July 10\, 2022; Worship service at 2:00 pm followed by a presentation at 3:00 pm\nLocation: St John Lutheran Church 804 W Vilet St\, Milwaukee\, WI. This service and presentation folder \nWorship Leaders:\nPresenter: Pastor Peter Prange \n\nDescription: Join us for a worship service and presentation commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Synodical Conference. Worship begins at 2:00 pm at St John followed by a presentation – The Synodical Conference: Founded on Fundamental Unity \nOn July 10\, 1872\, Professor Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther stepped into the pulpit at Pastor Johann Bading’s church\, St. John\, Milwaukee\, and exclaimed\, “O blessed and holy day!” He was preaching the opening sermon at the inaugural convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America and expressing his unmitigated joy that he had lived to see this day. With the Spirit’s help\, six confessional Lutheran church bodies in the American Midwest had forged a gospel ministry partnership that could and would have a profound impact on American and world Lutheranism for decades. \nBut had these synods discovered complete doctrinal agreement? They hadn’t\, nor did they expect to find it. Instead\, the Synodical Conference was founded on what Walther described as “fundamental unity\,” as Pastor Peter M. Prange will explain in this presentation to mark the 150th anniversary of the Synodical Conference’s first convention. How did our forefathers define fundamental unity? Come and find out.

SUMMARY:West Granville Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:The annual West Granville Cemetery Tour will take place on Saturday\, June 18\, 2022\, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please meet at the main cemetery entrance at 6815 N. 107th Street which is one block south of the intersection of 107th Street and Fond du Lac Avenue. Parking is available across the street at the historic Salem Landmark Church. \nWest Granville Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Milwaukee County. It is located in the far northwest corner of the county that was known as Granville Township. The first burial took place in 1844\, and the land donated by Jonas F. Barndt was incorporated as a cemetery in 1852. Many of the early settlers and their families who lived in the settlements of Granville Station\, Granville Center\, and West Granville\, all parts of Granville Township\, are buried in the cemetery. \nThe location of the cemetery was a deciding factor in the founding of one of the oldest Christian congregations in Milwaukee County. \nThe cemetery contains the final resting places of a variety of people. Some families were like the DeWerths who came and farmed the land when settlement first began in the 1840s. Others were like the Tices\, merchants who settled in the small community of West Granville and worked their trade. Some families came later like the Moellers (early 1900s) who were new to the neighborhood when they bought their farm. Still others came in the 1960s like Pastor Winfred Nommensen and family who served Salem congregation. This year’s cemetery tour will look at these generations of families and their impact on the community. \nThe tour will be conducted by Jim Moeller\, a son of Salem congregation who has several generations of relatives buried at West Granville Cemetery. He is a retired elementary school principal and teacher who served in the schools of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod for 44 years. This year’s tour is the tenth tour conducted by him\, and he enjoys sharing the history of Granville Township and these early and later settlers. For more information he can be contacted at jmoeller@tslwels.org. \n\nCourtesy link: Links to the past  (Milwaukee County cemeteries website) \nDisclaimer: In an effort to provide the most relevant and useful content\, we may provide links to non-WELS resources.
